That train used to run  About five times a day  Right across our land  But I guess they paid  Didn't have much choice Much choice that won't  Go off in the night  On that Runaway Ghost Runaway Ghost coast to coast  Let a poor boy ride and his Little Girl Lost Tracks running straight from yesterday You can ride even if you paid The old man I remember  He could shoot  Now he's gone forever  In the line of duty  That greatness must have  Skipped a generation  All I knew he left us  There at the station Chorus Counting old arrowheads  By a hurricane lamp  Shared with the Cree  Whatever we had  Mama could always  Make the most  Everything else left  On that Runaway Ghost Chorus Riding shotgun  Drinking like a travelling salesman  Suicide door  To suicide door and  Run out of gas  We'd borrow another  One more shot  And it's good night brother Chorus I played the traps  And I played my hand  Until the jive went out  And they axed the band  Sold the juke box  Sure to go down slow  Now who remembers that thing  Called Rock and Roll ~ Chorus I left the farm  For that steady pay  It's longer now  To yesterday  Where am I bound  When all I know  Is I'm riding tonight  On that Runaway Ghost Chorus You can ride even if you paid You can ride even if you paid

Highway 06:49
Was it the road  From the Golden Gate and on That kept us walking together When the honeymoon was gone Was it the wind That lifted us as wings Pretty as a cuckoo Who flies as she sings Was it a daydream Simple and childish That emptied us like bottles Left us wasted as a wish Was it the season That turned us around again Our last legs on that home stretch On the road that never ends Take to the Highway Hell bent on Heaven Seven come eleven You and I will stay On the Highway Highway Was it the river That washed us free and clean Where the ripples only mingle For a moment endlessly Was it the sea That called us to our souls Headlong through the storm To the mystery unknown Was it the Moonlight In the sky so dark and cool That pulled us by our heartstrings Each the willing fool Was it the sky above us Who's ever changing hues Carries song and sorrow And suffers both the two Take to the Highway Took the low way Got there just the same Just one more day On the Highway Highway Was it the rain There always was the rain No shelter but each other There always was the rain Was it the sunshine That set up on the hill While you and I were dancing And even lingers still Was it the song Put angels in your eyes Or did we just imagine That glimpse of paradise Was it love or money That left you here I'm helpless all I've got now Is an upper hand on fear Take to the Highway Ain't no free way You can stay If you can stay On the Highway Highway ********* Take to the Highway Hell bent on Heaven Seven come eleven You and I will stay On the Highway Highway

Joyville 06:45
This old town's a real fixer upper  A real work in progress  It's bound to get worse  Before it gets better  And that's anyone's guess It's got good bones and a heart of stone  And my happy home  We're just hoping for the best  Since we're in on a loan  Chorus  Where's the joy in Joyville  Everyone Where's the joy in Joyville  We're getting by on fun  Where's the joy in Joyville  I ain't seen it since I don't know when Where's the joy in Joyville We're gonna have to make it up again You in your old beater  And I called shotgun  Heading for the drive in  In your hundred dollar hit and run  It's the West and story  The Yohawks and the Squirrels  It's all the same in the end  It's all over a girl Went down to the Carleton  Just to see if they knew Delmer  Didn't get one straight answer  'till the British hotel Aylmer  They burned the church  All that we could do  Was stand in disbelief  You can't burn some things like a book And make off like a thief Chorus ~ You're going to pay the street tax Either way around here  It's almost worse to fit than not And our future's in arrears  Way downtown they're working to rule At the give-a-shit switch  It's the only rule they will obey  I guess I'm drinking a finer vintage Chorus

In the Day 06:42
You could play Bojangles pretty good Who could hit the moon shine like you could And I followed further down the road Than I thought it would ever go In the day Old as a rock and rolling like a stone Seems like just a day or two ago When there was time and time there was There was them and then there was us In the day I know these are the days I'm just looking back a ways In the day in the day Paradise comes like a kingdom on the run Who would have believed oh there were some In the day All these days just been on the run Seems about like since kingdom come There ain’t no end and you just begun And you just kinda left me on the run In the day

Looking at the shoreline As the lights just fade away It could be me dreaming For that live long day Cause this ain't much alone Just the name and the game It's just the man overboard Gets any kind of fame It was all I could do Just to get in tune And lay my dreams face up At the Suicide Saloon There's dreams and there are dreams It's the gambler talkin' now Keep em all up your sleeve You might just lose em to lay 'em down ....to lay 'em down You can play for honey You can play for gold Just give them what they want And leave them there cold Oh I tried American Pie The good old boys and I Couldn't make the levee No matter how hard I tried Don't know how many years it took Just to play to those ashtrays But I'll never play that hand again No matter what it pays There are times and there are times I could play the game I said never again but then Never's a long day ...it's a long day So I'm going up that river The river to the source Maybe I'm the only one Calling out for more More of that old sorrow More of the same What more that river's running Running through my veins So come on Champagne Charlie Come on Sweet Jane Come on Old Man River We're in the same boat anyway Singing that long song On a short ship hey hey It goes life is but a dream So why am I still awake Singing that long song on a short ship hey hey It goes life is but a dream so why am I still awake Singing that long song it's a sideman serenade It goes life is but a dream so why am I still awake

There's a cold wind blowing out of town With a high lonesome sound On a midnight too dark to see But there's some things you can only feel There's some things you can only feel Who has seen the wind Where it goes or where it begins You and me from what we can see Just wondering Wondering Who has seen the wind Summer comes along like an old friend I ain't seen you since I don't know when Some things change and some will always be And there's some things you can only feel There's some things you can only feel (chorus) Give me shelter from the cold and rain Give me something to understand Our love you can't see that it's real But there's some things you can only feel There's some things you can only feel (chorus) ~~~~~~~ Wondering through catastrophe Wondering through destiny Wondering what to believe Wondering Wondering Who has seen the wind In the dark tell me what it's about In the light there's a shadow of doubt There's no one who can make you believe There's some things you can only feel There's some things you can only feel (chorus)

Christian 04:57
Christian walked in through the door  Said what have you all been waiting for You may take me for my brother  We all must be some one another ....   The crowd was wild the night was wet  The truth is he said Though I came here not alone  That'll be the way I go When I go    I will leave you more than you will keep The plan not mine occult and deep Some doubter shouted hey pilgrim We've seen it all before and grinned  Christian said oh I don't care  And this enough to clear the air Through the smoke the keeper says  As long as someone pays  Still out she stays   The crowd still with unrest  Another round  the loudest says What could I do to quench your thirst  that you could not do yourself first Some hand grumbles loaves and fishes ... I wouldn't want to do the dishes It may be free but I must confess  It seems one hell of a mess  Hell of a mess    Christian sang his lost verse  while his hosts did their worst  He bared his soul and very heart  The keeper he just tended bar I will do for you Christian said  But I won't do it instead  Choose you who listen before too long  To hear the tune or sing the song  Sing the song    Well I've done without before  I didn't live to tell the story  We all have our cross to bear  The story goes by who weren't there I can relieve your poverty  But it would be replaced with greed  My father he could pay your debt  Though paying it means certain death  Certain death    The old man he can be a mother I'll take you to his house brother There's no getting in without me  No matter what your need  A party soon becomes a mob  Some are born to do the job  They searched the pilgrim after the deed All they found was one blank key One blank key A lady never enters  That she may never know          How thankless are her labours Whose fruits distill so low While you were without lady Your right hand man offended me  Forgive me what's done is done  You will never know my son  My son

Arcadia 05:39
Taking it on faith Making it the same Currency is our bond The great beyond the trade On this mortal soil Unraveling the coil Until every mystery  Is offered up as spoil From out the many one Underneath the sun Blazing our decline and fall Everyone All roads lead to the ruins of Rome  The spectacle of the stadium Let the games begin We're good to go In Arcadia Is there any chance  In these lands As it were a crucible The work at hand Words of wisdom spread From out the talking head It's all in the delivery Now that it's all been said Here's one free thought Everything else is gonna cost  This supply of demand  Was so dearly bought  Chorus Try to try again This means the end Virtually everything  Is yours now to pretend  You can't save this game And try over again When your turn is over You leave only your name The ghost of the machine Is haunting everything  Surely just a shadow Of the grand scheme Chorus ~ Come to take our chances Come by way of Atlantis Come by roads less traveled Blazing by the sun Gone beyond the firmament  Gone beyond commandment  Gone beyond all saving us In Arcadia Are we good to go What you want to know Are we good to go Why you want to know  Are we good to go I want to know Are we good to go

May well ask the wind Say where you coming from Ain't so all fire different Sun to rising sun How many moons Are gonna come and go before You're a-breezing Through my door You saw right past The golden chariot dawn The stars are outside falling Your curtains all are drawn You turned your eyes To feast on this alone The time is ripe And you my dear it's waiting on So full the moon To wax poetically So like a stone in spin Theoretically A song that comes to mind By way of heart and soul A measure, two At least I know (Chorus) Oh the Laughing Wind The Divine Comedy Singing over my head Did you hear what I see Oh the Laughing Wind Oh the Laughing Wind Oh the Laughing Wind I catch your drift Fleeting Zephyr Reel in the mists The same as ever Following the Lovelight's Fleet will-o-the-wisp To a Faerie Tale ending With a little twist ÷÷÷÷÷ Author Author A bow will not suffice Author of scene one And our own demise The Last Act written I was wondering Who laughs last In this Comedy Chorus Did you hear The one about the wind Did you get it It's over my head

Sing the Lay of the Land Sing the unsung land History of wyrd  and word Hers the dance the song unheard Let Regina rain Wash the shores of Thunder Bay See the lay of the land Number the stars and the sands Kings and queens and jokers high  Chariots bold on wheels of sky Hear the lay of the land  There in couplets stand Between the margins tongue and tale Over plain through hallowed vale Where Regina reigns Oh child of the Regina rain Born to rise and fall again In the rain the Regina rain What becomes and what became Oh child the start the end From the low the high began In the rain the Regina rain That falls to rise to fall again ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sing The Lay of the Land

about

Thanks to Danny Bourgeois, Dave Champagne and Coco McGraw
for their terrific contributions; as well my late brother in music
Chris Palmer.

Thanks to Don Coleman for his enthusiastic support, keen
project management and friendship.
Special thanks and love to my wife Stephanie for her inspiration
and work making my music and this album happen. Thanks to
Stephanie also for the photographs used here as album art.

Here are songs I have written and recorded over the last few decades. I have played guitars; electric and acoustic, finger picked, picked and slid as well as bass guitar, mandolin, synthesized pianos, organs, drums, percussion, symphonic instruments, moogs etc...I have sung main vocals and harmonies and done things too strange to mention to create sounds.

Here are ten out of over a hundred songs I have in various states of readiness chosen by my beautiful wife of over thirty years Stephanie (you may notice the 'As You Wish' on the bottom right of the album cover.)

I was essentially rolled along on the process by Stephanie and Don, necessitated by the fact that I would have gone on and on forever playing with these songs and not releasing them. I did enjoy the collaboration and their enjoyment as well.

I hope you can feel the inspiration and enjoy this release.

Dave
